Southern Hemisphere (Aug 2009- Aug 2010): The Green Wooden Monkey Year “Jia Shen ”
On July the 21st of 2009, with the second new moon after the winter solstice announcing the spring debut, started a new Chinese energetic year: The green wooden monkey year in the southern hemisphere. Meanwhile, in the northern hemisphere, the new Chinese year will start on the 5th or 6th of February of 2010, when their spring starts, announcing the year of the Metal Tiger. Why are different animals celebrated in the north and south hemispheres? Well the answer is above all logical. The Chinese tradition organized its twelve animals according to 12 principal Chinese tribes, each having a particular animal totem. They associated each popular animal to different periods of the year according to the movements of the sun, as thus generated the 4 annual seasons. For example: the terrestrial branch “Wu” meaning: the midday sun, was associated to the trigram “Li” (Fire), and oriented to the highest point of the sun during the hottest and lightest moment of the day using a solar clock. This astronomic phenomenon has two different perspectives, depending if you are standing in China or any place in Europe or the United States versus South America, Australia or South Africa. If you stand in China the midday sun will be oriented South. On the other hand, while standing in Brazil, the midday sun will be oriented North. This is why “Wu” (Fire) cannot be mechanically transferred to the South in the Southern Hemisphere, because that is not the place where we have the hottest lightest area during the day (Fire), contrarily it is up North. So when talking about Chinese astrology, that celebrates the movements of the sun, its absurd-in the Southern Hemisphere-to associate “Wu”, Fire, with the coldest area of our houses oriented to the Antarctica. Because, if you are born in winter in the Southern Hemisphere (that’s in July) you can’t have the qualities of “Wu”, Fire, that correspond to a hot bright spot (North) or moment (Summer in December).
Well, now that I’ve clarified this principle, even though Chinese Astrology is much more complex than this, because it’s based on the clockwise movements of Jupiter and “Taiyin” through the stellar lodges, we’ll concentrate on our main character: The Wooden Monkey.
The wooden monkey is playful, friendly, curious and fast. It’s negligent, unworried and uninhibited in social relationships and even impulsive on his reactions, just a little bit over the top. He does not follow social norms or worries about moral standards; he only cares about joy and pleasure. Nevertheless, this does not mean the monkey is frivolous or shallow; he seeks for spaces were he can grow, nourish, develop and expand his mind. This is why, this year, the monkey brings growing opportunities through social relationships and enchanting moments that will result on transcendental encounters of mutual growth. The monkey is quick and astute, he does not waste new opportunities, because he is determined to grow and win no matter what and he knows exactly what he wants and how to achieve it.
Even though the monkey is very sociable, is not altruist at all, he won’t stop to waste his time to grow on helping others. Specially those who do not move, vibe and seek the same things he needs. He smartly and strategically hangs around those who help him raise, because in this year, he’s got no time to lose. So this year, it is time to move, grow, insist and be creative in the way we promote and present our ideas and plans, we need to enchant others and establish new bonds, that help us and those of our tribe, grow as high and fast as we can and leave behind the dark period of economic recession. How? Be creative! Be impulsive! Take risks! Be a wooden monkey! It’s the right time…
